Hi, I'm Dave DeWitt, and today I'd like to talk a little bit about what the Bible says
0:09
about the human soul.
0:11
I realize the word soul can be used in different ways, so first I'll give you my definition.
0:19
The human soul is the spiritual essence which constitutes the true self of a human being.
0:27
I think I'm using the word the way most people do.
0:30
It's our true self, our spiritual essence.
0:33
In a minute we'll look at the distinction between the two words, but for a basic definition,
0:40
understand that the two words soul and spirit are inseparably connected.
0:47
First let's consider two basic questions.
0:50
Where did our human soul come from, and where is it going?
0:54
Genesis 2 tells us the human soul was created when God breathed into Adam's nostrils the
1:01
breath of life, and he became a living being.
1:05
The next question then is, does God create a new soul every time a person is conceived,
1:13
or is the spiritual nature of man passed along from Adam and Eve down through our parents
1:21
onto us?
1:22
While talking about Adam's encounter with Melchizedek, the author of Hebrews in 7, 9,
1:29
and 10 says this, and so to speak, through Abraham, even Levi, who received tithes, paid
1:38
tithes, for he was still in the loins of his father when Melchizedek met him.
1:44
Levi, who was several generations away from being conceived, was in the loins of his great
1:51
grandfather, or great-great-grandfather, let's see, it's Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Levi, however
1:57
many greats it is.
1:58
Anyway, it seems that the essence of our soul comes from our parents.
2:04
In Psalm 51, 5, David said, in sin my mother conceived me.
2:10
David is saying what my mother conceived was me.
2:16
Our individual human soul begins at our conception and leaves the body when it dies.
2:23
The human soul of unbelievers then goes to Hades to await the great white throne judgment,
2:31
and the human soul of believers goes to the presence of God.
2:36
But what exactly is the human soul?
2:40
One of the complications involved in studying this is that the Greek and Hebrew words for
2:46
soul and spirit do not always, or usually, refer to the human soul.
2:52
Soul can just mean a creature with personality, and spirit can just mean a creature with breath,
3:01
or just breath.
3:04
Often the words soul and spirit are used interchangeably.
3:08
So like always, we need to look closely at each context.
3:14
We get some good insight from Genesis 35, 18.
3:18
Speaking of Rachel's death while giving birth to Benjamin, Moses wrote, it came about as
3:26
her soul was departing, for she died.
3:30
This tells us that the human soul is possessing our body, but not part of it, because when
3:37
Rachel's body died, her human soul left.
3:41
It also seems that the human soul does not leave the body until the body dies.
3:48
The human soul does not leave the body when it's comatose, or there's no brain activity.
3:54
The soul only leaves when the body dies.
3:59
After death, the human soul is always seen as existing in some sort of bodily form, either
4:05
in the heavenlies or in Sheol, Hades, but never a disembodied spirit.
4:13
Demons are followed angels, and they may cause various manifestations or apparitions, but
4:20
there's no such thing as a ghost, a disembodied human soul roaming the earth.
4:25
But when the body dies, the soul does leave.
4:29
The human soul is not only distinct from the body, but it is our true self.
4:36
This was also true of Jesus.
4:38
Psalm 61, 10, David said, you'll not abandon my soul to Sheol, nor will you allow your
4:47
holy one to undergo decay.
4:51
Peter pointed out that David was referring to the Messiah, because David did indeed die
4:56
and undergo decay.
4:58
David was referring to the Messiah, who was Jesus, the God-man.
5:03
Being a man, the body of Jesus died, and Jesus himself was separated from his body.
5:10
The difference is, when Jesus left his earthly body, he was immediately in a resurrected
5:16
body.
5:17
When David referred to his own human soul in Psalm 49, 15, he wrote, but God will redeem
5:25
my soul from the power of Sheol, for he will receive me.
5:31
Notice again here, David equates my soul with me.
5:35
In other words, David does not distinguish between his soul and himself.
5:41
Solomon also saw the human soul as a person's true identity, when he said, he who is wise
5:48
wins souls.
5:50
Luke does the same when he writes Acts 2, 41, in that day there were added 3,000 souls.
5:59
Both believers and unbelievers have a human soul.
6:02
God told Ezekiel, behold, all souls are mine, the soul of the Father as well as the soul
6:09
of the Son is mine.
6:12
Our human soul can also be either troubled or at rest while we're in the body.
6:19
Remember telling his disciples, take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I'm gentle
6:24
and humble in heart.
6:26
Jesus said that what God told Jeremiah, and you will find rest for your souls.
6:33
This is what makes human suffering and human comfort more extensive than that of animals
6:42
who could only suffer and be comforted physically.
6:46
The website gotquestion.org credits George MacDonald with saying, quote, you don't have
6:53
a soul, you are a soul.
6:56
Seems to me that's a pretty good distinction, although they are often mentioned together.
7:01
We have a human heart.
7:04
We have a human body.
7:05
We have a human mind, but we are a human soul.
7:10
We have a physical body, as do plants and animals.
7:14
Our heart and mind refer to aspects of our personality, our intellect, emotion, and will,
7:21
which animals also have, but animals do not have anything comparable to our human soul.
7:29
The human soul is our spiritual nature, which reflects our thoughts about morality, purpose,
7:35
destiny, justice, and creativity.
7:40
These we share with God and angels, but not plants and animals.
7:44
Our spiritual nature is in our human soul, and there's nothing comparable to it in animals.
7:53
Let's review that just a bit.
7:55
There are three kinds of living things on this planet in the universe, plants, animals,
8:01
and humans.
8:03
Plants have a body, which is physical, but that's all.
8:08
Animals have a body and a personality, intellect, emotion, and will.
8:12
You think of your dog or something, he has an intellect, he has emotions about that,
8:18
and he'll make decisions by will.
8:21
And personality develops society, so we see many societies, many times elaborate societies,
8:30
in animals.
8:32
Humans have a body and a personality, so they have intellect, emotion, and will, but they
8:38
also have a spirit, which is a sense of morality, which leads to a sense of justice, purpose
8:46
and destiny, who am I, what am I for, why am I here, where am I going, and creativity.
8:53
Spirituality develops culture.
8:56
Animals don't develop culture because they don't have a spirituality, no matter how smart
9:00
a dolphin or ape you might find, they don't create a religion, they don't sing a song,
9:06
they don't write a poem, they don't have the spiritual nature.
9:12
All right, let's get back to our other points here a minute.
9:17
Is there a distinction between soul and spirit?
9:21
One passage that mentions them separately is 1 Thessalonians 5.23.
9:27
Now may the God of peace himself sanctify you entirely, and may your spirit and soul and body
9:33
be preserved completely without blame at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
9:39
But the point here does not seem to be to separate the soul and spirit of man,
9:44
but rather to emphasize that the whole man should be sanctified entirely.
9:50
Most of the discussion about separating the soul and spirit centers around Hebrews 4.12.
9:56
For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword,
10:00
and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, both joints and marrow,
10:05
and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.
10:09
Here's Ryrie's comment from his study Bible, quote,
10:14
The meaning is that the word pierces to the depths of the soul and spirit, not between the two.
10:22
They stand for the innermost facets of our immaterial nature,
10:27
just as joints and marrow the material aspects. Both soul and spirit can be involved in what
10:35
pleases or displeases God. Close quote, that was from the Ryrie study Bible.
10:41
It does not seem that soul and spirit are two separate aspects of man,
10:47
except where soul only refers to personality.
10:51
If there's a distinction between soul and spirit within the human soul,
10:56
it's most likely that the spirit emphasizes the core motivation and the drive for sanctification.
11:04
When God declares that a whole generation of disobedient Israelites would not go into the land,
11:11
he also added this about Caleb. He said, but my servant Caleb, because he's had a different spirit
11:18
and has followed me fully, I will bring you into the land which he entered.
11:26
Paul exhorted the Corinthians, let us cleanse ourselves from all defilement of flesh and spirit,
11:34
perfecting holiness in the fear of God. In conclusion, the human soul is spiritual,
11:41
not physical, unless it's used to represent personality. The soul is the spiritual aspect
11:48
of human beings. It begins at conception, leaves the body at death, continues on in some bodily
11:56
form, ultimately to be resurrected either to the new Jerusalem or to the lake of fire.
12:04
It does not exist in plants or animals, but for us humans, it's the innermost facet of
12:10
our immaterial nature. It's our true self. We do not have a soul, we are a soul.
12:18
