Hi, I'm Dave DeWitt, and today I'd like to talk about what the Bible says about conspiracy
0:09
theories.
0:11
As a definition, a conspiracy theory is an unproven assumption that there's a secret
0:18
plan by a group of people to do something considered wrong by another group of people.
0:25
Some examples of conspiracy theories include the government's hiding the evidence that
0:29
the world's flat, governments lying about the fact that we went to the moon, and the
0:35
space program.
0:37
The FBI assassinated Martin Luther King and framed James Earl Ray for it.
0:44
The CIA hired Lehigh V. Oswald to kill President Kennedy.
0:50
Princess Di was murdered.
0:52
The American military, Area 51, is researching and experimenting on aliens and their spacecraft.
1:00
We should wear tinfoil hats to shield our brains from electromagnetic mind control.
1:07
The Republicans colluded with the Russians.
1:10
The Democrats colluded with the Russians.
1:13
American doctors paid Chinese researchers to develop and release the COVID-19 virus.
1:21
Some things I want to mention in addition to these, I just call them corollaries to
1:25
the definition.
1:27
Number one, corollary theory.
1:30
Conspiracy theories always include a judgment of motives.
1:35
First Corinthians 4.5, therefore do not go on passing judgment before the time, but wait
1:40
until the Lord comes who will bring to light the things hidden in the darkness and disclose
1:45
the motives of men's hearts, and each man's praise will come to him from God.
1:52
Business people tend to say they're all in it for the money.
1:56
Just follow the money.
1:57
Politicians say they're trying to get more power.
2:01
Hollywood actors claim they're in it for the notoriety, publicity, popularity.
2:07
Motives are always included in a conspiracy theory.
2:12
A second corollary, conspiracy theories are inevitable because people recognize their
2:20
own sin in others.
2:22
We're all sinful, and sinful people suspect others of doing what they're doing or are
2:28
tempted to.
2:29
It's like the lady who said this church is full of gossips.
2:34
Wonder where she got that idea.
2:36
One political party often accuses another political party of doing what they themselves
2:41
are doing or would be doing given the opportunity.
2:45
We tend to think people are committing the sins we are.
2:49
Three, this is the third corollary, conspiracies are not theories, and theories are not conspiracy.
2:58
Let's unpack that a bit.
3:00
First of all, conspiracies are not theories.
3:04
A conspiracy is a historical reality with a secret plan which is now no longer a secret.
3:12
It was devised by a group of people to do something considered wrong, illegal, or harmful
3:20
by another group of people.
3:23
Conspiracies are a matter of historical record.
3:26
They're not theories.
3:27
The Bible records many conspiracies.
3:30
The English word conspiracy is used to describe nine events in the Numeric Standard Bible.
3:37
Here's a couple of examples, 2 Samuel 15, 12, and the conspiracy was strong for the
3:42
people increased continually with Absalom, Acts 23, 12.
3:47
When it was day, the Jews formed a conspiracy and bound themselves under an oath saying
3:55
that they would neither eat nor drink until they had killed Paul.
4:00
The Bible records many other conspiracies as historical events that happened in the past.
4:05
Conspiracies occur regularly in war, business deals, politics, but all of these are the
4:13
past and they're no longer secrets.
4:17
Conspiracy theories are ideas about possible secrets kept by a certain group in the present.
4:24
It isn't sufficient evidence yet that they are true or false, and they are not yet in
4:31
public arena where they can be examined and debated.
4:37
Theories are not conspiracies, so let's just look at it the other way around.
4:42
That's because theories have evidence.
4:46
Here's some theories with evidence.
4:49
Gravity, Newton in 1687, every particle in the universe attracts every other particle.
4:58
Copernicus in 1543 said the earth revolves around the sun and the universe is filled
5:04
with planets that revolve around suns.
5:08
Special relativity, Einstein in 1905, space, time, matter, and energy merge in such a way
5:14
that speed reduces time and atomic energy can be used to make bombs.
5:21
Plate titanics, Wagner in 1912 and Wilson in 1960, the earth's continents are moving plates.
5:32
Quantum mechanics, the nature of objects and the cause and effect of events are influenced
5:37
by observation.
5:40
There are theories without evidence.
5:44
Gravity is spontaneously generated from non-life.
5:48
Lead can be made from gold.
5:50
Blood leading should be used to heal sick people.
5:53
The universe evolved from a big bank 13.8 billion years ago.
5:58
Man-made carbon dioxide is responsible for dangerous global warming.
6:04
These are theories without evidence.
6:08
Theories are not conspiracies because they're not secret.
6:13
Conspiracies are in the public domain and are open to public examination.
6:18
Nonetheless, a conspiracy theory is a special form of theory, one that has not yet reached
6:25
the public domain.
6:27
So when it comes to evaluation, we can use the same criteria for testing a conspiracy
6:34
theory as any other theory.
6:38
Next, I want to point out that we cannot rely on science to evaluate a conspiracy theory.
6:47
Much of what's called science today, especially by the media, is often just propaganda of
6:53
the liberal progressive worldview.
6:56
Real science follows a scientific method.
6:59
This is a quote from Wikipedia.
7:01
It involves careful observation, application, rigorous skepticism about what is observed,
7:08
close quote.
7:10
The scientific method can be understood as using three steps.
7:15
One, actual observation of something in the real world.
7:20
Two, repetition of skeptical examination of these observations leading to a formula or
7:27
a hypothesis.
7:30
And three, modifying the hypothesis as directed by further observation.
7:36
So real science is based in actual real world observation, followed by a critical analysis
7:43
and a change of hypothesis when new observation is demanded.
7:49
But what liberal progressives call science is circular reasoning.
7:55
It's based on proclamations, not explanations.
7:59
Some liberal progressive professor or doctor, or maybe Al Gore with a slideshow, makes a
8:04
speculation consistent with the progressive agenda.
8:09
That speculation then is quoted by others as evidence, while evidence to the contrary
8:16
is simply ignored.
8:18
Scholarly, in quotes, scholarly journals will only publish articles and universities will
8:27
only hire professors favoring the liberal progressive agenda.
8:33
Then it's claimed that the progressive speculation about, say, climate change, evolution, life
8:39
on other planets, the nature of the virus, biological support for homosexuality, is supported
8:47
by a consensus of scientists.
8:50
So it's called settled science.
8:53
Timothy 6, 20 to 21, in the King James, reads,
8:58
O Timothy, keep that which is committed to thy trust, avoiding profane and vain babbling
9:05
and oppositions of science falsely so-called, which some professing have erred concerning
9:12
the faith.
9:13
Now I want to talk about evaluating a conspiracy theory.
9:18
When you hear a conspiracy theory, two basic questions should come to mind.
9:24
A, should this conspiracy theory be evaluated?
9:28
And B, if this theory needs to be examined, how should we go about it?
9:34
So first, should this conspiracy theory be evaluated?
9:38
Now remember, the Bible tells us truth, the way things actually are.
9:43
Science, good science that follows the scientific methods, gives us theories that change with
9:49
new evidence.
9:51
In evaluating theories and conspiracy theories as a Christian, we should initially ask four
9:57
questions.
9:59
Number one, is there a biblical basis for assuming it's important to spend time and
10:04
energy evaluating it?
10:07
Before you spend time on a conspiracy theory, make sure the issue being discussed is an
10:12
application of a biblical principle.
10:15
Is spending time reading and talking about this something Jesus and the apostles would
10:20
do?
10:21
Is this something the body of Christ was commanded to do?
10:25
The world's full of lies and foolish ideas.
10:28
Is there some reason I should look at this one?
10:32
Second Timothy 2.4 says no soldier in active service entangles himself in the affairs of
10:38
everyday life.
10:40
Now they may please the one who existed him as a soldier.
10:44
Number two, is the conspiracy theory in question taking people away from a focus on building
10:50
the word of God into faithful men who will be able to teach others also?
10:56
Is it distracting believers away from the gospel message?
11:01
Second Timothy 2.17 and 18 says, and their talk will spread like gangrene, among them
11:07
are Harmoneus and Philetus, men who have gone astray from the truth, saying that the resurrection
11:16
has already taken place and upsetting the faith of some.
11:21
Number three, does the conspiracy theory attack the credibility of the Bible?
11:28
For example, the Da Vinci Code in a 2003 mystery thriller novel by Dan Brown claimed that the
11:35
Catholic Church ignored and covered up manuscripts proving Jesus had a child with Mary Magdalene.
11:43
This is a blasphemous lie that needs to be addressed because some of it is being taught
11:50
by many progressives, many universities, as a way to discredit the Bible.
11:58
The truth is after searching 2,000 years, only 27 first century Christian writings have
12:03
ever been found, ending with Revelation, and they're all in the New Testament.
12:11
And we have found over 25,000 of those in New Testament manuscripts.
12:17
Over 5,800 in Greek, plus 10,000 in Latin, and another 9,300 in other languages.
12:25
Hierarchical writings all came after the first century.
12:30
Titus 1, 10, and 11, for there are many rebellious men, empty talkers, deceivers, especially
12:35
those of the circumcision who must be silenced because they're upsetting whole families.
12:42
Four, does the conspiracy theory take our focus off of the fear of God?
12:51
Isaiah 8, 12, and 13 says, you're not to say it is a conspiracy in regard to all that
12:59
the people call a conspiracy, and you are not to fear what they fear or be in dread
13:05
of it.
13:06
It is the Lord of hosts who you shall regard as holy.
13:12
He shall be your fear, and he shall be your dread.
13:17
Having decided that a theory needs to be dealt with, there are four investigative questions
13:23
to consider.
13:25
Number one, does the theory use some additional authoritative source for understanding Scripture?
13:33
Number two, does the theory take away from a clear biblical teaching?
13:38
Number three, does the theory contradict any direct biblical statements?
13:44
And number four, does it deny or alter the biblical author's clear intended meaning?
13:52
Well, as a conclusion, a conspiracy is a historically established past event.
14:01
A theory is an unproven assumption in the public domain.
14:06
A conspiracy theory is a suggestion, a form of a theory, that some group of people have
14:14
a secret hidden agenda which is in some way wrong, which when we hear conspiracy theory,
14:22
we need to ask, is this issue discussing something Jesus and the apostles would have addressed
14:28
as false teaching, which opposes the Word of God or is a danger to the people of God?
14:35
If it is, then it needs to be shown how this theory or what it reveals is contrary to the
14:43
truth revealed in the Bible.
14:46
Thank you for listening.
