Hi, I'm Dave DeWitt, and today I want to talk about the question, what about calling
0:08
God she?
0:11
There are three arguments used to support calling God she.
0:15
Number one, God created man in his image, male and female.
0:19
Number two, God is also referred to as a mother.
0:23
And three, calling God she emphasizes the love of God.
0:28
So I'll talk about those just a little bit, one at a time.
0:30
First of all, God created man in his image, both male and female.
0:35
The elders of a church, a friend of mine attends, recently defended using feminine terms for
0:41
God.
0:42
Here's a few of the elders' comments.
0:45
God has no gender.
0:47
If he were a man, only men would be in his image.
0:52
When God created man in his image, he created them male and female.
0:56
Bisexuality is not God's quality.
1:00
Well, here's my answer.
1:03
But the men and women were not created the same.
1:07
God created man from the dust, but the woman was taken out of man because it's not good
1:12
for man to be alone, Genesis 2.18.
1:17
When these elders go back to creation to demonstrate that both the males and females are created
1:22
in the image of God, they neglect the rest of the story.
1:27
Eve was not created as head or even as co-leader with Adam.
1:32
She was created as a helper suitable for him.
1:36
Of course, God does not have gender in the sense of sexual identity.
1:41
Jesus told the Samaritan woman God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship him
1:46
in spirit and in truth.
1:49
God is spirit, but God is also a him, a personal being who is a planner, creator, sustainer
1:57
of everything, Isaiah 45, 5-7.
2:01
The pronoun he identifies with the masculine identity in the sense of headship.
2:09
Any reference to God as she would not be a God who is a planner, creator, and sustainer
2:15
of all things.
2:17
She sounds like a God who is in submission to some other God.
2:23
Now the second comment, God is also referred to as a mother.
2:28
Well, there are six references used to claim God as a mother.
2:33
Here's those references with my comment.
2:36
First one is Deuteronomy 32, verse 18, you neglected the rock who begot you and forgot
2:43
the God who gave you birth.
2:46
My answer, this is a metaphor about God creating the nation of Israel.
2:51
Moses had no intention of suggesting God was feminine.
2:55
If this says God is an actual mother, then it says God is an actual rock.
3:03
Psalm 131-2, surely I have composed and quieted my soul like a weaned child rests against
3:11
his mother.
3:12
My soul is like a weaned child within me.
3:16
Answer, David is talking about his own composure, not the character of God.
3:22
Isaiah 49-15, can a woman forget her nursing child and have no compassion on the son of
3:30
her womb?
3:31
Even these may forget, but I will not forget you.
3:36
Answer, this is a contrast, not an identification.
3:40
The point is God's compassion goes beyond that of a mother.
3:45
Isaiah 66-13, as one whom his mother comforts, so I will comfort you and you will be comforted
3:54
in Jerusalem.
3:56
Answer, in the context, starting with verse 10, this is a Jerusalem, not God who's referring
4:02
to as the comforting mother.
4:06
Hosea 11-3, yet as I who taught Ephraim to walk, I took them in my arms even though those
4:13
may forget, but I will not forget you.
4:17
Answer, why is this a reference to a mother?
4:20
Fathers might also teach their children to walk.
4:24
Matthew 23-37, Jerusalem, Jerusalem who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent
4:30
to her.
4:31
How often would I gather your children together the way the hen gathers their chicks under
4:36
their wings and you are not willing?
4:39
Answer, there's no more intent here to refer to God as a mother than there is to refer
4:45
to God as a chicken.
4:46
The point is God wants Jerusalem to return to him.
4:50
This is not an attempt to feminize God.
4:55
The God of the Bible is called a father, not a mother.
4:59
Deuteronomy 32-6, is not he your father who brought you?
5:05
Malachi 2-10, do we not have one father?
5:09
Has not one God created us?
5:12
Matthew 6-9, our father is in heaven.
5:16
John 10-30, I and the Father are one.
5:20
First Corinthians 8-6, yet for us there is but one God, the Father.
5:27
In the Gospels alone, Christ used the term father in direct reference to God for nearly
5:34
160 times.
5:39
Now the objection number three, calling God she emphasizes the love of God.
5:45
Here's some comments made by an unnamed author representing Christian feminism today, quote,
5:54
When I say she, when I think of her, I get a full, warm, compassionate feeling in my
6:01
heart.
6:02
I get a God of love feeling.
6:04
When I say he, I don't get that same feeling.
6:09
Maybe it's because of the image of God I absorbed during my childhood, the scary dude who sat
6:15
up in heaven and judged the quick and the dead.
6:19
Maybe it's because everyone I've ever met who makes a point to exclude LGBTQ people
6:26
call God he.
6:27
I don't know, but I do know that she just feels more like a God of love to me.
6:36
That's a close quote.
6:38
My answer, God does not just have one attribute.
6:42
The attribute of God includes truth, holiness, righteousness, and justice.
6:47
Throughout scripture, God initiates his contact with sinful man in the form of judgment, flood
6:53
of Noah, destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah, exile of Israel, and the death of Jesus to
6:59
pay for our sins.
7:01
Paul wrote, but because of your stubbornness and an unrepentant heart, you're storing up
7:07
wrath for yourself in the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God.
7:14
That's in Romans 2.5.
7:17
Let's think about the plan of salvation.
7:20
Salvation message of Christ and the apostles was first bad news, not good news.
7:25
It was first a realization that all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, Romans
7:32
3.23.
7:33
Not a, quote, full, warm, compassionate feeling, close quote.
7:38
As Jesus said, fear him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.
7:45
That's in Matthew 10.28.
7:47
John's statement, perfect love casts out fear, means there must first be fear for perfect
7:53
love to cast out.
7:55
If God was just a, quote, full, warm, compassionate feeling, close quote, without truth, holiness,
8:03
and justice, there would be no need for Jesus to die for our sins, which may be the point
8:09
of the liberal progressive agenda.
8:13
The last point I want to make is that the God of the Bible is he because he denotes
8:18
headship.
8:19
1 Corinthians 11.3, but I want you to understand that Christ is the head of every man, man
8:25
is the head of every woman, and God is the head of Christ.
8:29
Feminine references and gender neutral references are never used and should never be used to
8:36
denote the God of the Bible because those designations diminish the headship, the lead
8:43
of God.
8:44
The Old Testament Hebrew had only masculine and feminine pronouns, and it shows the masculine
8:50
for God every time.
8:52
The New Testament Greek has gender neutral terms, yet God is always referred to in masculine
8:58
terms.
9:00
Any reference to God as she or mother or any other feminine term is not talking about the
9:06
God of the Bible.
9:08
It's not determined by studying the Bible.
9:11
It's not an application of some biblical passage.
9:15
From Genesis to Revelation, the God of the Bible is referred to with a masculine personal
9:20
pronoun.
9:21
Genesis 1.27, God created man in his own image.
9:26
In the image of God, he created him, male and female.
9:30
He created them.
9:32
Revelation 4.2 and 3, immediately I was in the spirit, and behold, a throne was standing
9:38
in heaven, and one sitting on the throne, and he who was sitting on it was like a jasper
9:45
stone and sardis in appearance.
9:49
Well thanks for listening.
