Hi, I'm Dave DeWitt, and today I want to talk a few minutes about the subject of hell.
0:09
Christians don't talk much about hell anymore, even though it's a major subject in the Bible.
0:14
So I thought we should have a look at it.
0:17
After a few general comments, I'd like to ask and answer some of the common questions
0:22
like where is it?
0:24
What's it like?
0:25
Who will go there?
0:26
How long will they stay?
0:30
Hell experientially.
0:31
Well, experientially, there's a lot of I died and came back stories.
0:38
The most popular are the I saw the light at the end of the tunnel stories.
0:44
But I also talk to people who are frequently around death and near death experiences who
0:50
report on believers screaming in torment before they die.
0:54
I'm not suggesting we should give credibility to experiences.
0:58
Experiences are not a good test for truth because they don't carry their own interpretations.
1:05
Meaning must be brought to an experience.
1:08
It could be that the light at the end of the tunnel that the liberals think is such a good
1:12
thing may be the fire of hell.
1:15
My only reason for mentioning it is to show that there are many different near death recovery
1:21
experiences.
1:23
They're not all pleasant ones.
1:26
Hell is a prominent subject in the Bible, New American Standard Bible, and the New Testament
1:32
has a reference to Hades.
1:35
Some King James translates that hell some of the time.
1:39
There are 10 references to Hades.
1:41
There's 13 references to Gehenna, including Jesus references to a fiery Gehenna, fiery
1:48
hell in Matthew 5, 22 and 18, 9.
1:52
There's six references to the lake of fire.
1:54
All of them are in the book of Revelation.
1:57
Jesus also talked about a place of outer darkness, a place where there'll be weeping and gnashing
2:03
of teeth.
2:04
In addition to these, the Old Testament has 67 references to Sheol, but it's hard to equate
2:11
Sheol with hell.
2:14
Sometimes it's just equated with death and sometimes a place where the dead go.
2:21
It's never seen as a good place, but neither is it always a place of suffering.
2:26
The Old Testament authors seemed to only understand that there is a afterlife in an actual place
2:33
called Sheol.
2:36
Jesus referred to hell more than any other biblical character.
2:40
Jesus also clarified for us the Old Testament concept of Sheol.
2:45
In Luke 16, 19-31, Jesus told about the beggar named Lazarus and a selfish rich man, both
2:54
who died and went to the same general place.
2:59
This seems to be the Old Testament Sheol, but Lazarus was in a good place, a good part
3:06
of this place, and he was with Abraham in the place called Abraham's bosom, and the
3:11
rich man was in a place of torment from flames.
3:17
These two places are separated by a great chasm, so unbeknownst to the Old Testament
3:23
prophets, Sheol seems to have a good part, also known as the bosom of Abraham, and a
3:30
bad part, elsewhere referred to as Hades.
3:34
The Apostle John records that the people kept in a place called Hades and are resurrected
3:40
and judged at the Great White Throne Judgment, Revelation 20, 13, and 14.
3:47
Death and Hades gave up the dead which are in them, then death and Hades were thrown
3:52
into the lake of fire.
3:54
This is the second death, the lake of fire.
3:58
So although it seems that the unbeliever goes to this temporary place of torment called
4:04
Hades, he or she will be resurrected to the Great White Throne Judgment and thrown into
4:10
the lake of fire.
4:13
So where is hell?
4:15
Well some have suggested that hell is in the center part of the earth.
4:19
A prophet, Ezekiel, and the Apostle Paul refer to a place called the lower parts of the earth,
4:28
it's in Ezekiel 26, 20, and 32, 24, and it's in Ephesians 4, 9.
4:34
Ezekiel records God saying, quote, then I will bring you down with those who go down
4:40
to the pit, to the people of the old, I will make you dwell in the lower parts of the earth
4:48
like the ancient waste places with those who go down to the pit, close quote.
4:54
Henry Morris records this comment, quote, to say this is not scientific is to assume
5:00
science knows much more about the earth's interior than is actually the case.
5:05
The great pit or hell would only need to be about 100 miles or less in diameter to contain
5:13
with much room to spare all the 40 billion or so people who have ever lived, assuming
5:19
their spiritual bodies are the same size as our physical bodies, close quote.
5:25
This is from Henry Morris in his book, The Bible Has the Answer.
5:31
Although it's possible that Hades is somewhere in the earth, there are a few things to consider.
5:38
First, even if the lower parts of the earth is descriptive of Hades, that's not possible
5:46
for the lake of fire because this earth is completely destroyed.
5:51
Peter says the heavens will pass away with a roar and the elements will be destroyed
5:56
with intense heat and the earth and its works will be burned up.
6:01
And John tells us the first heaven and the first earth pass away.
6:05
So even if the lake of fire is connected to earth, it would be a new earth, not this earth.
6:13
And second, it's also possible that the lower parts of the earth is simply a metaphor referring
6:19
to a remote unknown place.
6:22
David refers to the depths of the earth both as a time of trouble and his mother's womb.
6:30
So it may not be a description of a location.
6:33
At any rate, the final place of suffering for the unbeliever is the lake of fire located
6:40
outside this present realm.
6:44
So what is hell like?
6:46
The most basic description of hell is the lake of fire which burns with brimstone.
6:52
Brimstone is a reference to the rotten egg smell of a burning sulfur.
6:57
Jesus acknowledged it three times as a place of the outer darkness, a place where there'll
7:02
be weeping and gnashing of teeth, and twice he calls it a fiery hell.
7:10
But we must also conclude that there must be different kinds of suffering or different
7:15
degrees of suffering or different places of suffering in hell.
7:21
First of all, people go based on great white throne judgment where the dead are judged
7:26
from the things which are written in the books according to their deeds.
7:30
So their deeds determine their judgment.
7:33
Also, Jesus told Pilate, he who delivered me to you has the greater sin in John 19 11.
7:41
So some sins are greater than other sins, and as Abraham asked, shall not the judge
7:48
of all the earth deal justly?
7:51
Also, Jesus told a parable where he concluded, quote, and that slave who knew his master's
7:58
will and did not get ready or act in accordance with his will will receive many lashes.
8:05
But the one who did not know it and committed deeds worthy of a flogging will receive but
8:10
few.
8:11
From everyone who has been given much, much will be required.
8:16
And to whom who haven't been entrusted much of him, they will ask them more.
8:21
Close quote.
8:23
That's from Luke 12 47 and 48.
8:27
Also speaking about the scribes, Jesus said those who devour widows houses and for appearance
8:34
sake offer long prayers, these will receive greater condemnation in Mark 12 40.
8:42
So we can conclude that not everyone who goes to hell will have the same suffering in hell.
8:48
Therefore, although the whole place is extremely undesirable, a lake of fire and outer darkness,
8:55
a place of weeping and gnashing of teeth, it seems that not everyone suffers the same.
9:02
So it is very likely that some places in hell are worse than other places.
9:08
Who goes to hell?
9:09
Well, it's been said that those who go to hell choose to go there.
9:15
No, I doubt it.
9:16
They may choose to rebel against God, be independent of God, blaspheme God and want to be their
9:22
own God.
9:24
People who reject God and his goodness enjoy being sinners, but it's unlikely they desire
9:31
punishment for their sin in hell.
9:34
Hell's also not just a separation from God.
9:37
Atheists would think that would be more like paradise.
9:41
Hell is a wrath of God based on the justice of God, not a choice of sinners.
9:49
Salvation is to be delivered from what we desired because of our sin and our sin nature.
9:58
Salvation delivers us from the lake of fire which we deserve.
10:02
So those who go to hell are the unsaved, the unbelievers who have not received Jesus Christ
10:09
as their Savior.
10:11
The justice of God requires the wrath of God upon sin.
10:15
Hell satisfies the justice of God.
10:18
So if you're not saved by grace through faith in the blood of Christ that paid for your
10:24
sin and absorbed the wrath of God, then you're going to a place where you will experience
10:29
the wrath of God for your sin.
10:33
He who believes in the Son has eternal life.
10:36
He who does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him,
10:41
John 3.36.
10:45
How long do people stay in hell?
10:48
The often stated idea that unbelievers are simply thrown into the lake of fire and are
10:52
burned up is without biblical support.
10:55
Actually, those thrown into the lake of fire are in a resurrected body, not a physical
11:00
body that can be burned up.
11:03
The only actual statement about the duration of hell is given concerning the devil, the
11:08
antichrist, and the false prophet, quoting Revelation 20.10, and the devil who deceived
11:15
them was thrown into the lake of fire and brimstone where the beast and the false prophet
11:19
are also, and they'll be tormented day and night forever and ever, close quote.
11:26
But we should not conclude that the place described as the lake of fire is only for
11:33
these three, because at the judgment after the second coming, Jesus said to those on
11:40
his left, depart from me, accursed ones, into the eternal fire, which has been prepared
11:46
for the devil and his angels.
11:48
So the judgment of those who received the mark of the beast in the tribulation sounds
11:55
like forever, quoting Revelation 14.11, and the smoke of their torment goes up forever
12:02
and ever, they have no rest day and night, those who worship the beast in the image
12:07
and receive the mark of his name.
12:11
It can be argued that the Greek Hebrew and the Greek words for eternal and forever often
12:18
mean until the end of the age and don't necessarily have the same meaning as the English words
12:23
eternal and forever.
12:26
And of course, we do not know what God's going to be doing in the far distant future.
12:31
But we can confidently say there is nothing in scripture that would indicate that hell
12:36
is temporary or that anyone is ever delivered from it or given an opportunity for repentance
12:42
or forgiveness after they go there.
12:45
It would also seem that those in hell are not interested in repentance, in which case
12:52
the termination to their stay would not be justified.
12:57
Now a conclusion about the questions we asked.
13:00
Where is hell?
13:01
It's a place not yet occupied somewhere beyond this physical earth in another dimension
13:08
which God has prepared for the unbelievers of the earth to join the devil and his angels
13:14
in eternal punishment for their sin.
13:17
What's hell like?
13:18
Well, it's described as a lake of fire, a place of outer darkness where there'll be
13:24
weeping and gnashing of teeth.
13:27
Who goes there?
13:28
Everyone whose name has not been written in the foundation of the world in the book of
13:34
Life of the Lamb according to Revelation 13a.
13:38
How long can people stay in hell?
13:41
There's nothing in scripture that would indicate that hell is temporary or that anyone is ever
13:46
delivered from it.
13:49
If we take the Bible seriously, if we listen to the warnings of the prophets and the apostles,
13:56
if we take the words of Jesus as true, then there's no way to deny the reality of hell.
14:03
The Bible clearly teaches us about a real physical place of afterlife suffering, a lake
14:09
of fire, a place of weeping and gnashing of teeth and outer darkness known under the general
14:14
description of the word hell.
14:17
It's not what Wikipedia calls mythological folklore and religious tradition.
14:24
Hell is not an idea born of conservatism or legalism or sadism.
14:30
It's not a tool for Christians to use to scare people into conversion.
14:35
It's just not an idea created by the imagination of the writers of the Middle Ages.
14:41
It's not a condition of suffering while living on earth, psychological depression, or a bad
14:47
date.
14:49
This is something that cannot be denied by any serious follower of the word of God.
14:56
If the Bible's true, then hell's a real place, and everyone who has not personally received
15:02
Jesus Christ, inviting him into his or her life by a decision of faith, will go there.
15:09
The justice of God requires it.
15:12
Well thanks for listening.
