Hi, this is Dave DeWitt, and I want to say a few words about what's come to be known
0:08
as the Charles Schultz philosophy quiz.
0:12
You probably received this quiz in an email or seen it in a devotional book.
0:18
Snopes says, though this saying slash quiz is often attributed to Charles Schultz, he
0:27
in fact made no such statement.
0:30
We don't know who is the real creator of this quiz, but it's been circulating on the internet
0:36
since at least the year 2000.
0:38
Nonetheless, whoever wrote it, the quiz is worth reading.
0:42
I'll just read through it and then just add a few comments at the end.
0:48
So here's the quiz.
0:49
This is all one quote.
0:51
Number one, name the five wealthiest people in the world.
0:56
Number two, name the last five Heisman Trophy winners.
1:02
Number three, name the last five winners of the Miss America pageant.
1:09
Number four, name 10 people who have won the Nobel or Pulitzer Prize.
1:15
Number five, name the last half dozen Academy Awards winners or best actors or actresses.
1:24
Number six, name the last decade's worth of World Series winners.
1:30
How'd you do?
1:32
The facts are, and I'm still reading the quote, the facts are none of us remember the headliners
1:38
of yesterday.
1:40
These are no second-rate achievers.
1:43
They're the best in the field.
1:45
But the applause dies, awards tarnish, achievements are forgotten, accolades and certificates
1:52
are buried with their owners.
1:55
Here's another quiz, and I'm going to remind you I'm still reading the quote.
1:59
Here's another quiz.
2:01
See how you do on this one.
2:03
Number one, list a few teachers who aided your journey through school.
2:09
Number two, name three friends who have helped you through a difficult time.
2:15
Number three, name five people who have taught you something worthwhile.
2:20
Number four, think of a few people who have made you feel appreciated and special.
2:26
Number five, think of five people you enjoy spending time with.
2:31
Number six, name a half dozen heroes whose stories have inspired you.
2:36
Easier?
2:38
The lesson?
2:40
The people who make a difference in your life are not the ones with the most credentials,
2:45
the most money, or the most awards.
2:48
They're the ones that care.
2:51
End of quote.
2:52
I have a few things to say.
2:55
It seems the quote, the quiz is a bit heavy-loaded on the front end since it asked me to name
3:00
five or ten people in each category, which is a bit unreasonable.
3:05
Nonetheless, the unknown author of the quiz makes a significant point.
3:10
He or she should have added to the first quiz a number seven, name the pastors of the five
3:18
largest churches in the world, or number eight, name the five best-selling Christian authors
3:23
in the world.
3:24
Or they may have added to the second quiz a number seven, name the person who led you
3:30
to Christ, or number eight, name some people who discipled you in the scripture, or if
3:37
you grew up going to a church, name some of the pastors of that church.
3:42
The significant lesson would be the people who make a difference in your life are the
3:47
ones who care, the ones who gave something to you without expecting something in return.
3:54
That's what the New Testament calls agape love.
3:58
But I'd like to suggest that for the believer in Jesus Christ, there is an even better lesson.
4:05
The most significant people are not just the ones who care about you, they're the ones
4:11
who care more about God than they care about you.
4:15
Abraham was an impacting patriarch, not because he prioritized people, but because he was
4:22
a friend of God, James 2, 23.
4:25
Moses made the biggest impact on Israel, not because he was prioritizing the Israelites,
4:34
but because his main desire was to, and I quote, know your ways that I may know you
4:41
so that I may find favor in your sight, Exodus 33, 13.
4:46
David was the greatest king in Israel, not because he prioritized the people, but because
4:52
he was a man after God's own heart.
4:55
Jesus was the most impacting person in all of history, because he did not come to glorify man.
5:02
He told his heavenly father, quote, I glorified you on earth, having completed the work which
5:09
you've given me to do.
5:11
Paul wrote, if I were still trying to please men, I would not be a bondservant of Christ.
5:19
You want a spouse who loves God more than they love you.
5:23
You want a teacher who is truer to the word of God than to their own thoughts.
5:28
You want a fellowship of believers that focuses on the holiness of God, not accommodating
5:33
your sin.
5:35
You want friends who are not just the ones who care, but the ones who care more about
5:40
pleasing God than pleasing you.
5:43
Anyway, I thought this little quiz that has been hanging around the internet for years
5:48
was worth a few comments.
5:50
Thanks for listening.
