Hi, I'm Dave DeWitt and today I want to talk about the subject of judging one another.
0:10
There's an old joke about a hundred-year-old man who had a physical exam and the doctor
0:15
told him he was in excellent health.
0:18
Doctor asked him, to what do you attribute your good health?
0:22
The old man said, I'm never judgmental with idiots.
0:26
I always agree with an idiot.
0:29
The doctor said, that's ridiculous, your social relations can't possibly explain your
0:34
good health.
0:35
The old man said, you're probably right.
0:40
This podcast is not about corporate judgment such as that carried out by civil government
0:48
or religious institutions.
0:49
Rather, I shall attempt to give a biblical answer to the question, should an individual
0:56
person judge another individual person?
1:00
But that focus brings up other questions.
1:04
Did Jesus tell us to not judge one another?
1:08
Should Christians judge other Christians who are unrepentantly living in sin?
1:14
Should Christians judge people who claim they cannot help being what they are, LGBTQ and
1:20
so on?
1:22
Is judging one another inevitable?
1:26
I suggest the Bible describes two very different kinds of judgment, punishment and discernment.
1:34
First let's talk about punishment judgment.
1:37
Punishment is where a penalty is imposed on someone to ensure justice.
1:44
Here's some passages with my interpretive comments.
1:48
First I'll read the passage and then I'll put my comments in.
1:51
This is Matthew 7, 1 and 2.
1:55
Do not judge lest you be judged, for in the way you judge you will be judged, and by the
2:01
standard of measure it will be measured to you.
2:06
With my comments, do not judge, deal out punishment, lest you be judged, punished by God.
2:16
For in the way you judge, punish others.
2:20
You will be judged, punished by God.
2:23
And by your standard of measure it will be measured to you.
2:27
Here's Romans chapter 2 verse 1.
2:31
Therefore you are without excuse every man who passes judgment, for in that you judge
2:36
another and you condemn yourself.
2:39
For you do judge practice the same things.
2:44
With my comments, therefore you are without excuse every man who passes judgment, punishes
2:51
people.
2:53
For in that you judge, deal out punishment, to another, you condemn yourself as deserving
3:00
punishment.
3:02
For you judge practice the same thing, commit sins worthy of punishment.
3:08
Here's James 4, 11.
3:11
Do not speak against one another, brethren.
3:14
He who speaks against a brother or judges his brother speaks against the law and judges
3:19
the law.
3:21
With my comment, do not speak against one another, brethren.
3:26
Do not try to verbally punish a brother as with gossip and accusations.
3:32
And that's kind of how we usually do it.
3:35
He who speaks against a brother or judges his brother speaks against the law and judges
3:40
the law.
3:43
Here's Romans 12, 19.
3:46
Never take your own revengeance, beloved, but leave room for the wrath of God.
3:52
For it is written, Vengeance is mine, I'll repay, says the Lord.
3:57
With my comment, never take your own revenge, beloved, but leave room for the wrath of God.
4:04
Because the wrong done against you is not sin against you, it's sin against God.
4:09
For it's written, Vengeance is mine, I'll repay, says the Lord.
4:14
Concerning the wheat and tares, Jesus said, allow both to grow together until the harvest.
4:21
And in the time of the harvest, I'll say to the reapers, first gather up the tares
4:26
and bind them in bundles and burn them, representing the punishment, judgment of God.
4:33
But gather the wheat into barns, representing the mercy, judgment of God.
4:40
Reason number one, we should never judge in the sense of punishment.
4:44
A corollary to that is, punishment judgment is not discipline.
4:50
Proverbs 12, 1 says, whoever loves discipline loves knowledge, but he who hates reproof
4:54
is stupid.
4:57
Discipline of your children or anyone is about getting them back on the right path, not dealing
5:02
out justice for their sin.
5:05
In some cases, discipline may involve the same action as punishment, but the objective
5:12
should never be punishment.
5:15
Punishment judgment is always and only of God.
5:20
The second corollary, punishment judgment should not be used against personal attacks.
5:27
Jesus said, you heard that it was said, an eye for an eye, tooth for tooth, but I say
5:31
to you, do not resist an evil person.
5:35
But whoever slaps you on the right cheek, turn him the other also.
5:39
Jesus and the apostles strongly, clearly, and logically defended the truth against attacks
5:46
from Pharisees, Sadducees, false apostles, and false teachers, but they did not attempt
5:52
to deal out physical punishment to those who attacked them.
5:59
Now let's talk about discernment judgment.
6:03
Discernment is a person's perception which allows them to make a distinction with wisdom
6:09
and understanding.
6:12
Here's some passages, again, with my interpretive comments.
6:16
First of all, Malachi 3, 15 and 16, and those who feared the Lord spoke to one another and
6:25
the Lord gave attention and heard it and took a remembrance and it was written before him
6:30
for those who fear the Lord and who esteem his name.
6:35
Now that verse with my comments.
6:38
Then those who fear the Lord, and that fear came from discernment, spoke to one another
6:45
because they had discernment and the Lord gave attention and heard it and a book of
6:51
remembrance was written before him for those who fear the Lord and esteem his name.
6:56
Those are the two basic requirements for discernment judgment.
7:01
Luke 12, 57, why do you not even judge it with your own initiative?
7:07
My comment, discernment, what is right?
7:12
Here's John 7, 24, do not judge according to appearance, but judge with righteous judgment.
7:19
My comments, do not judge, discern according to appearance, but judge, discern with righteous
7:28
judgment, discernment.
7:31
There are also many verses that imply the use of judgment as discernment.
7:37
For example, do not give what's holy to dogs and do not throw your pearls before swine.
7:43
That requires a discernment to know which ones are dog and which are swine.
7:50
Conclusion number two, we should embrace the fact that we continually judge in the sense
7:56
of discernment.
7:59
Corollary one, discernment judgment comes from those who are spiritual beings.
8:07
Unlike animals, human beings cannot help but judge one another.
8:12
Like animals, humans have morality, a conscience, a sense of judgment, purpose, and destiny.
8:20
This means that humans cannot help but judge their surroundings with a moral framework.
8:27
To therefore say we should not be judgmental is asking us to act like animals.
8:35
That's not only absurd, it's impossible.
8:39
Corollary B, discernment judgment should never be about motives.
8:45
Only God can judge motives.
8:48
Paul wrote, God will judge the secrets of men's hearts through Jesus Christ.
8:54
Do not even examine myself.
8:56
The Lord will bring to light the things hidden in darkness and disclose the motives of men's heart.
9:03
And then each man's praise will come from God.
9:08
That's from 1 Corinthians 4, 3 to 5.
9:13
The third corollary, discernment judgment should not measure others by our application of Scripture.
9:22
Therefore no one is to act as your judge, Paul says, in regard to food or drink in respect
9:28
to a festival or a new moon or a Sabbath day, that from Colossians 2.16.
9:36
Being judgment is not about conjuring up a set of rules to live by from God, like when
9:42
I grew up it was don't drink, smoke, and chew, and go with girls that do.
9:49
Why is it important to be judgmental?
9:53
Being judgmental is making judgments which are mental.
9:58
When mental judgments lead to punishment, it's moved into an area which belongs to God.
10:05
But being judgmental is also about using the mind, and that's morally essential.
10:12
Here's why.
10:14
Number one, being judgmental increases awareness.
10:19
We have a conscience, and the Bible tells us what's right and wrong.
10:25
If we do not use our conscience and the Bible to judge one another in the sense of pointing
10:31
out sin, we become dull, unsalty, lukewarm, drift away.
10:39
Every passage of the Bible calls upon believers to be judgmental in the sense of discernment.
10:47
Two, seeking peace with unrepentant sinners instead of judging them by a discernment dulls
10:54
our knowledge of right and wrong.
10:57
It's not Christ, but the Antichrist that seeks to bring peace to an unrepentant world.
11:05
In Zechariah 1, 11, and 15, we read,
11:09
So they answered the angel of the Lord, who was standing among the myrtle trees, and said,
11:15
We have patrolled the earth, and behold, all the earth is peaceful and quiet.
11:22
He that is God said, I am very angry with the nations who are at ease.
11:32
God never brings peace to an unrepentant world because it would compromise his holy character.
11:39
Three, judging evil improves discernment.
11:44
Tolerating evil impairs discernment.
11:48
Joseph's being judgmental about Potiphar's wife kept him from adultery.
11:53
Aaron's not being judgmental allowed him to build an idolatrous golden calf.
12:00
Four, being judgmental helps people be less naive.
12:06
Solomon stated the purpose of the book of Proverbs like this,
12:11
To receive instruction in wise behavior, righteousness, justice, and equity,
12:17
to give prudence to the naive, to the youth knowledge and discernment.
12:23
Later he wrote, evil men do not understand justice,
12:26
but those who seek the Lord understand all things.
12:32
Jesus said, Beware the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.
12:36
The apostles told the church to be sensitive to false prophets, false apostles, false brethren,
12:44
false wonders, false teachers.
12:48
Being judgmental is essential for spiritual growth.
12:52
The author of Hebrews told us that solid food is for the mature,
12:56
who because of practice have their senses to discern good and evil.
13:01
Five, being judgmental helps keep one another from the judgment of God.
13:07
James wrote, My brethren, if any one of you
13:11
strays from the truth and one turns him back,
13:14
let him know that he's turned a sinner from the error of his ways.
13:18
He will save the soul from death and will cover a multitude of sin.
13:23
James 5, 19 and 20. Judging one another is
13:29
a way in which we bear one another's burden and love one another.
13:34
First John 4, 17 to 21.
13:39
Conclusion. The satanic world system wants us to blur
13:44
the difference between punishment and discernment.
13:48
If the world can get us to eliminate discernment
13:52
using the word judgment, then morality goes away.
13:57
In the progressive world, we can all act like animals.
14:03
Sin becomes malevolence. A sinner is a sociopath
14:07
and there is no abominations to God because we humans
14:12
have evolved into being the gods of the planet.
14:16
By contrast, the Bible says being judgmental
14:20
in the sense of discernment is an essential part of spiritual growth.
14:25
It increases our sensitivity to sin, sharpens our sense of right and wrong,
14:31
preempts compromise with the world, and increases wisdom.
14:36
Discernment, judgment, makes us the salt of the earth
14:40
and the light of the world.
14:43
Conclusion. We should never judge in the sense of punishment.
14:48
That's up to God. We should continually judge in the sense of discernment.
14:53
That's our assignment from God. Thank you for listening.
