Hi, I'm Dave DeWitt, and today I'd like to say a few things about Christians gathering
0:09
together in small groups.
0:12
What does the Bible say about the size of the groups we gather together?
0:17
I'll make the case that there's something valuable about the church gathering in small
0:23
groups.
0:24
Actually, the New Testament church, the believers saved through the ministry of the apostles,
0:30
never met in large groups.
0:32
The assembly of church was always in a small group.
0:37
The only recorded church assemblies were in homes, and homes were small.
0:42
All churches were house churches, and here's a few examples.
0:47
Acts 2.46, this is very early on in Jerusalem, breaking bread from house to house, they were
0:54
taking their meals together with gladness.
0:58
Chapter 5.42 of Acts, from house to house, we're talking about the apostles, kept right
1:04
on teaching and preaching Jesus as the Christ.
1:10
Acts 20.20, Paul reminds the Ephesian elders, I did not shrink from declaring to you anything
1:17
that was profitable in teaching publicly and from house to house.
1:24
In Romans 16.3-5, Paul wrote, Greet Priscilla and Aquila, my fellow workers in Christ Jesus,
1:33
who for my sake wrist their own necks, to whom not only do I give my thanks, but all
1:42
the churches of the Gentiles greet the church in their house.
1:47
So apparently Priscilla and Aquila had a church that met in their house in Rome.
1:53
In 1 Corinthians 16.19, Paul wrote this, Aquila and Priscilla greet you with the church that's
2:01
in their house.
2:03
So apparently Priscilla and Aquila had a church that met in their house in Rome, and when
2:09
the Jews were forced out of Rome, they moved to Corinth, where they may have gathered another
2:13
church together in their home, at least the church in Corinth knew who they were.
2:19
Then they apparently moved to Ephesus, and again opened their home for a gathering of
2:25
believers, because Paul sends to Corinth greetings from the church that met in the home of Priscilla.
2:33
Priscilla and Aquila in Ephesus.
2:37
In Colossians 4.15, Paul says, Greet the brethren who are in Laodicea, and also Nymphaea and
2:47
the church that meets in her house.
2:50
Philippians 1 and 2, Paul wrote to Philemon, our brother and fellow worker, also to Apphia,
2:59
our sister, and to Agrippus, our fellow soldier, and to the church in your house.
3:06
So it's clear, three things are clear.
3:09
One, the New Testament church never gathered in a large auditorium type of meeting.
3:15
Number two, they had their assemblies in homes.
3:20
And number three, homes were always small.
3:24
So we can conclude that the gathering of the church of the New Testament, the gatherings
3:29
were always small.
3:32
And everybody who reads the New Testament understands that.
3:36
So people who support big churches have offered the following arguments.
3:41
I'm going to give you five arguments offered in support of large churches with my answer
3:47
to each.
3:48
All right.
3:49
So number one, yeah, but what about Jesus fed the 5,000 and 4,000 and Peter spoke to
3:57
over 3,000?
4:00
My answer, those were unscheduled gatherings of crowds that spontaneously came together.
4:08
They were not gatherings of the church.
4:11
People gathered around Jesus for healing and teaching.
4:15
Peter spoke to the crowd that experienced the miracles at the day of Pentecost, and
4:21
again to those who gathered around the healing of the lame man at the temple.
4:27
But there was no example or command for believers to gather together in a meeting of the church
4:33
in a large group.
4:35
Practically speaking, occasional large group meetings might be advantageous for evangelism
4:43
or distributing goods to the poor or needy, but huge crowds gathered around Jesus because
4:50
he healed everybody who came to him.
4:53
Paul spoke to large groups of unbelievers in Athens, but no regular assembly of the
4:59
church was scheduled, planned, or organized as a large meeting.
5:05
Second, a second common argument given for a megachurch people is sort of like, yeah,
5:13
but what about persecution?
5:15
Maybe they couldn't build a large church due to persecution.
5:19
Well, my answer is the apostles never held back from doing what was right, what the right
5:25
thing to do was or the best thing to do because of persecution.
5:31
The apostles never suggested bigger was better for a church gathering or that it would be
5:37
better to have a large group.
5:39
For three, objection, yeah, but an example is not a command.
5:44
The apostles did not command small groups.
5:47
Since the apostles did not specify a form of a church, we're free to adapt whatever
5:53
style works best.
5:55
My answer is the idea that what's good is what works is pragmatism is not a good test
6:03
for truth.
6:04
Also, it's true that examples are not commands, but they're given for a reason.
6:12
The form forms the impact, or as Marshall McLuhan used to say, the medium is the message.
6:20
If you change the way the message is presented, you also change the message.
6:28
If I go to hear a symphony orchestra, I do not expect to learn to play the violin.
6:34
I go as a spectator to be entertained with no thought of involvement, and the bigger
6:40
the audience, the better.
6:43
It's best if all the seats in the auditorium are filled, but entertainment is not what
6:48
the apostles had in mind.
6:51
Small groups encourage participation, thinking, and reasoning.
6:58
Another objection, a fourth one, yeah, but small groups are easily taken over by false
7:02
teaching.
7:03
My answer, really?
7:06
And large groups aren't?
7:08
Nearly every significant false teaching in the church is linked to some megachurch pastor.
7:15
The preaching in small groups is usually the most biblical, and it encourages participation,
7:23
which is the best check on false teaching.
7:27
A fifth objection, yeah, but large churches often encourage breaking up into small groups
7:33
during the week, midweek small groups.
7:37
My answer is small groups themselves are not what the apostles formed.
7:43
Let's think about it a bit.
7:44
Hebrews 10.25 includes the command, not forsaking our own assembly together.
7:51
The words I'd like you to notice are our own, or the King James says, of ourselves.
7:59
Believers who only gather in mixed groups are not gathering themselves together.
8:05
As believers, we're to gather ourselves together.
8:10
We're not to build or rent an auditorium, school, restaurant, mall, or some major facility
8:17
and invite in everyone who'll come.
8:21
That's okay if you're having an evangelistic rally for a few days, but it's not an assembly
8:28
of the church.
8:30
The church is when believers who know each other from their various networks of fellowship
8:37
find a way to gather themselves together in a group small enough to fit into a house.
8:44
When we call for gatherings of auditorium-sized places and encourage seekers to come, then
8:52
we have a mixed group, not a gathering of the church.
8:55
Of course, we can't teach them much because they won't understand much.
9:01
When that large group is divided up into small groups, we do not have the believers gathering
9:08
themselves together.
9:10
We have a mixture of small groups, which is usually allowing shallow and superficial characteristics
9:18
by sharing ignorance.
9:20
So the assembly of the church is not just to be small, it's to be a gathering of believers,
9:29
but subdividing large groups into small groups for the sake of having small groups.
9:36
In conclusion, we can say that with confidence that the gatherings of the first century were
9:42
in groups small enough to meet in someone's home.
9:47
Whatever the immediate reason for it, the apostles never suggested something different
9:53
would be better.
9:55
The small group generated a discussion rather than a sermon, which led to a growth and ministry
10:03
not available in a large group setting.
10:07
Well thanks for listening.
